Designed in the likeness of the University of Iowa’s mascot, Kinnick Stadium’s north end zone features a custom, 650’-long shingled glass screen which wraps the upper seating levels like a mantling hawk’s wings. The glass enclosure provides protection from harsh north winds during late-season games and natural ventilation for warm-weather games early in the season.
The layered curtain wall system incorporates a custom frit pattern that abstracts feather markings, while also making the glass expanse visible to birds. Each of the 352 pieces of glass – weighing in at up to 400 lbs. and measuring nearly 12’ tall – was hand set using a total of approximately 2,500 clips. The intricate design required careful coordination, planning, and attention to detail. |
