High honors for Architectural Wall Systems at AIA Iowa's 2018 Awards Celebration

During this year’s AIA Iowa Annual Convention, Architectural Wall Systems, LLC (AWS) received two awards recognizing exceptional craftsmanship, including the Excellence in Craft Honor Award.

The Honor award for Excellence in Craft was given to AWS for innovation and attention to detail in the installation of the exterior façade of the University of Iowa’s Voxman School of Music. The dynamic design on this building challenged the team to think outside of the norm and create solutions never done before. Jury’s comments recognized the skill it took to bring this idea to life, “This felt like an example of an elegant concept that showed up early on in a sketchbook…but ultimately gets dumbed down, or VE’d out, or removed for any of the countless reasons that most ideas don’t get built – But they got this one built.”

In addition, the Visual Arts Building on the University of Iowa campus received a Merit award for Excellence in Craft. The building boasts an impressive industrial façade, featuring custom-design perforated stainless-steel panels. “We really appreciated the idea of a diaphanous skin as an initial driving gesture, then taken all the way thru CDs, mockups, shop drawings…always focused on achieving the end goal of a skin that shimmered and shifted in a remarkable way,” the jury included in comments.
